Marni Fall 2011 Runway Review

Consuelo Castiglioni is certainly not afraid of a print, and with Marni’s geometrically inclined past; the prints for Fall are fitting. Star shapes, stripes, and octagonal grids were shown on covetable layers of crepe, wool, leather, and silk with a luxe helping of fur.

Inspired by master contemporary dancer Martha Graham and modern architecture, and the constraints that come with the notion of discipline paired with the fluidity and femininity of the movement. A palette of warm neutrals with touches of peach, mint, and emerald were accented by a story of textures that included beading, pom poms, and jewels.

The Marni girl is often seen as a carefree young woman but with this season it seems she has grown up. There was an element of bespoke fashion with a 50s sensibility as matching coats and skirts were paired with fur-cuffed gloves and shift dresses adorned with dramatic bejeweled necklines and luxurious fur. It is rare that a designer can grow into the brand and change its style without alienating the target client but with this collection Castiglioni managed to maintain the Marni sensibility in a more mature collection.
