Best in Show Awards, Fall 2011: Part 1

Having covered hundreds of shows here on The Fashion Spot this season, I’m sure our favorites are evident, but with New York, London, Milan, and Paris over, we thought we would give you a round up of some of our favorite (and least favorite) looks, collections, accessories, and presentations from the past month.

Biggest Spectacle: Mugler

Love her or hate her, there is nothing that says spectacle like an appearance by Lady Gaga, but mistress of pop aside, the Thierry Mugler presentation itself had models roaring, tumbling off their massive platforms, slinking, and draping around the installed church columns which all made for a sight to see.

Best Model Casting: Louis Vuitton

There are few things that get a front row buzzing like some old school supermodels on the catwalk. With icons like Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Amber Valletta, and Carolyn Murphy donning Louis Vuitton’s wares, it was hard to concentrate on the clothes, even if they were gorgeous.

Best Front Row: Mulberry

For a show at 10:00 A.M. on a Sunday, a celebrity presence is unlikely, but they came out in droves for the Mulberry show in London. Stars such as Kirsten Dunst, Clemence Poesy, Olivia Palermo, and Rebecca Hall shared space with the international fashion elite and it was almost too much for the street style bloggers to handle.

Best Use of Fur: Marni

There was so much fur on the runways this season that it was hard to narrow down a favorite look, but these fur-trimmed gloves from Marni stuck in my mind long after the show. The fur-sleeved jackets that we’ve seen so many of this season might be a bit too outrageous for most of us, so these gloves could add a touch of glamour to an otherwise minimalist look.

Worst Use of Fur: Versace

This was tough because for every good use of fur we saw this season, there were even more on the other side. This collar from Versace proved to be one of the more ridiculous looks and if its odd proportion wasn’t bad enough, the neon hue certainly didn’t help. I’d venture a guess that this won’t be a hot trend for fall even with chokers and turtlenecks creeping back into fashion.

Most Unconventional Trends: Peplums

Even more unusual than the resurgence of dresses over trousers, the peplum trend, which was shown at Thakoon, Miu Miu, Stella McCartney, Giambattista Valli, Proenza Schouler, and more, can add volume to an otherwise streamlined look without making you look bulky. The trend is almost universally wearable in spite of its quirky nature as it can add curves to very slim women or merely accentuate them on hourglass shapes.

Most Surprising Trend: White Turtlenecks

There are very few people that actually look good in a turtleneck but the runways of labels like Celine and Hermes were filled with them. While I understand the clean lines, and even with equestrian styling and minimalistic outerwear, I generally use the rule that if it doesn’t look good on a model, it probably won’t look any better on me.

Best Set: Chanel

Everyone knows that Chanel spares no expense to transform the Grand Palais into a fanciful wonderland each season, but this set topped them all. With the dry ice spilling over what looked like volcanic rock, it was the perfect space to show the renowned label’s more risky urban collection.

Stay tuned for part two of our Best in Show awards later this week!
