Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring 2012 Recap

The recession certainly put a damper on many international Fashion Weeks that, prior to the downturn, had been gaining steam.  Luckily it seems that after a few setbacks (including an attendance drop of about 20% in 2009), Nordic fashion is back with a strong showing at the Spring 2012 shows during Copenhagen Fashion Week, which took place from August 3 through the 7.

Nordic fashions are in fact perfect for troubled economic times because they tend to not be focused on hyper advanced, technological designs or high-end price points, but rather focused on quality at mid-range price points. While there still may be few editors and buyers from New York, Paris, or Milan making the trip to Copenhagen a slew of international buyers and no less than 60,000 buyers from Scandinavia and continental Europe make the trip for the Spring 2012 season.

Spread across five days, Spring 2012 Copenhagen Fashion Week included 39 shows, five fairs, and a slew of events. In a sign that this Fashion Week was focused on the industry’s up-and-coming talent, the opening show was that of Anne Sofie Madsen who has been gaining attention since showing her graduate show from The Danish Design School in 2009. Madsen who worked for John Galliano in Paris prior to founding her namesake brand demonstrated a flare for the dramatic with beautiful pleating and graphic details. She told Dazed Digital, “The collection is called Mononoke and is inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film Princess Mononoke (released 1997) and is made with a wish to guide you into a world where contrasts can seem warring, but with interpretation will appear as complementary […] It is the meeting of the mechanical ballerina and the graceful samurai. “

Other notable collections included Munthe Plus Simonsen‘s, which featured a mostly boho line-up including knee-height fringed boots and loosely-tailored casual minis; at Designers Remix, brightly colored solids blended seamlessly with monochromatic white and black looks including tailored blazers and high-waist trousers; Tabernacle Twins managed to give high-appeal to brightly colored bermuda shorts.

On the beauty side, it’s impressive that most of the shows’ hair looks were styled by Wella, while the makeup looks were created by Max Factor artists. There were a number of eye-catching looks shown and it’s refreshing to know that there were mostly drugstore-priced products used to achieve them.
