Jason Wu Spring 2013 Runway Review

Known for his chic ladylike sophistication, it was fitting that Jason Wu’s spring runway show was brimming with socialites, particularly the latest “it” girls, the Clarins sisters, given that the designer found himself inspired by sexually charged Helmet Newton photographs this season. The result was a slew of bra tops (a burgeoning Spring 2013 trend), malleable leather, and lots of lace (a Wu favorite).

While many of the looks would prove too risqué for the likes of Michelle Obama – at least as styled on the runway – there was much to love in the pencil skirts, embroidered leather, lace accented blouses, and printed trench coats, no matter a woman’s age. Harness-like straps, which we also saw at BCBG, are worth singling out and reflected the designer ability to carefully balance bondage-inspired touches with prim and proper femininity. This was best evidenced in the gowns that closed out the show, which paired harness straps with lots of tulle for a dazzling effect that oozed red carpet glamour.
