Chado Ralph Rucci Spring 2013 Runway Review

Ralph Rucci’s shows are one of the few where it’s abundantly clear that the room is filled with a number of devoted (paying!) fans. Peppered among editors and buyers are impeccably coiffed older woman dressed to the nines (I’m talking floor sweeping dresses), accompanied by suited men and much to their delight, Rucci delivered a stellar collection of flawlessly crafted designs. Surprisingly, many of the designs this season went in a sporty direction and among the neutrals were gorgeous pops of of bright fuchsia, yellow, and red.

No matter if the outfit veered in a sportswear or cocktail direction, however, everything was crisp, streamlined, and brimming with intricate details (think tiny peep holes on the back of garments and mini fabric slits). Standout looks included white separates with sheer panels and fitted dresses and blazers with brightly colored contrasting inserts.

Ralph Rucci is a couturier and it shows. He’s one of the few designers showing in New York that can deliver a goosebump-inducing collection that is at once fresh and interesting, while being wholly wearable. Hopefully, the sportswear elements introduced this season will help Rucci reach beyond his core demographic because he’s deserving of being embraced by a more youthful generation as well.
