Balmain Spring 2013 Runway Review

High octane sex appeal has become a Balmain trademark and Olivier Rousteing shows no signs of veering off course. This season, however, that sex appeal came mixed with Nineties-era power shoulders for an exaggerated silhouette that will prove to be even more difficult for most women to pull off than what a Balmain lineup usually includes.

Adding to the over-the-top silhouettes were harlequin prints in a variety of color iterations and elaborate crystal beading, which certainly gave a luxe look to the boxy cuts, but make them all the more difficult to envision someone other than Anna Dello Russo-types wearing. More success was found in the simpler pieces, namely recurring patterned high-waist trousers. Sometimes less is more.
