News & Runway

Set at the Natural History Museum in London, Caroline Charles revealed her new collection on the 14th September. Designer of 45 years, Caroline Charles described her designs as “grown up, groomed and glamorous.”

Caroline Charles’ collection certainly brightened up London Fashion Week with pretty pastel colours of orange and pink. The show was split into 5 parts entitled, Calypso, Tutti Frutti, Liquorice Allsorts, Check mate, and Strictly Party.

Her collection boasted beach wear, casual, party wear and a stylish take on the modern working woman. The show started with the Emmy Urquhart Quintet who opened the show and sang throughout.

The three things inspiring Charles were colour, travel and fabric. Her collection had skirt suits in pink and orange, which were the main colours. Sequin dresses in an array of colours made their way down the runway, including a set of two tone dresses. Pink, lilac, orange, white, blue, black, and green were among the colour palette used in the show.

Caroline Charles’ take on the modern working woman is what intrigued me the most. Pinstriped suits in black and white, with an alternative feminine cut, were right on the feminine-menswear trend with exceptional tailoring and models sporting bowler hats and briefcases.

Black and white check suits and little black dresses all provided a chic, fashionable way of dressing with subtle sexiness.

The beachwear was probably my favourite part of the show, and I’ve never been so excited for summer to return. Kaftan style dresses in orange, pink and blue pebble print provided a stylish way to cover up. Models paraded down the catwalk in white bikinis with an orange trim. A model strutted her stuff down the catwalk, with a video camera in hand, recording the audience.

The collection included tribal styled sarongs with bikini tops, and models clad in beautiful patterned kaftans accessorized with flower garlands and straw hats. My favourite piece, a maxi dress in different shades of blue which reminded me of waves.

Overall, Caroline Charles’ Spring/Summer ‘09 collection was fun, colourful and sweet.
