Louis Vuitton is in the process of constructing a permanent Frank Gehry-designed art foundation in Paris. Construction began in 2008 at the Jardin d’Acclimatation in the Bois de Bologne. The foundation isn’t slated to open until 2012, but Louis Vuitton will be giving a preview via an exhibition in Hong Kong.
The exhibition – titled “Louis Vuitton: A Passion for Creation” – is set to run from May 22nd to Aug. 9th at the Hong Kong Museum of Art and will recount the French luxury giant’s longtime association with the art world.
The exhibition traces the history from the Louis Vuitton founder’s grandsons, who teamed with Art Deco designers to create the famed Louis Vuitton trunks, to the recent collaborations between creative director Marc Jacobs and contemporary artists like Takashi Murakami and Richard Prince.
Further, a scale model of the Gehry-designed glass building will be featured in the Hong Kong exhibit along with a video interview with the Canadian architect.
The show is being touted as a star attraction during Hong Kong’s 17th annual French May Arts Festival. The WWD is reporting that the site-specific exhibition will include some works that reflect the complexity and energy of Hong Kong, which is looking to becomes an art power player in Asia.
Elements that will be included are a film titled “Central” by French artist Dominique Gonzales-Foerster, along with works by seven young local artists. Select items from Louis Vuitton’s permanent collection will also be displayed, including large-scale works by Jeff Koons, Andreas Gursky, Pierre Huyghe, Gilbert & George and Jean-Michel Basquiat, plus videos from Rosemarie Trockel, Wolfgang Tillmans, Ange Leccia, Philippe Parreno, Zhou Tao, and Ryan Trecartin.
