Roland Mouret Gets Inspired by Couture for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

The Inspiration: Couture details by way of ready-to-wear. “These were the kind of effects I used to strive for when I was styling […] We’re reaching the point where ready-to-wear is now at the level that couture was in the 1950s,” the designer told Telegraph.

The Look: The designer told style.com that the notion of trends, given that he now designs eight collections a year, is irrelevant. Fittingly, his lineup was a series of beautiful pieces that countless women will undoubtedly want in their arsenal of cocktail staples. Those that know and love the designer’s galaxy dress will delight in seeing a number of fitted dresses, this season updated with geometric surface embellishments, zippers, fringe, lace and feathers, in keeping with the couture craftsmanship Mouret intended. Few designers could make zippered leather appear as effortlessly lightweight. There were also quite a number of prints, including orchid and blown-up check, and lots of patchwork dresses. Long vests, belted coats and jackets, tops and dresses with rolled leather collars were also winners in the beautiful collection.

The Accessories: Paneled pointed flats and booties and handbags that were in keeping with the designer’s debut last year — clean and simple, but sophisticated in design, they came structured with triangular shaped flaps.

The Beauty: Side-parted straight hair worn down and a black rimmed smoky eye.

The Takeaway: There’s no denying the appeal of one of the designer’s galaxy dresses, but this season Mouret proved he’s equally adept when it comes to designing embellished cocktail-wear.
