Stella McCartney Fall 2014 Runway Review

The Inspiration: Candy, sports.

The Look: Stella McCartney has chosen a new themed embellishment for Fall 2014 — a gold-piped swirl, completely reminiscent of ribbon candy seen from the side. Whether made of separated zipper teeth or colored rope, it embellishes coats, pants and a sweater dress with equal aplomb. The silhouettes are mostly easy but also trendily minimal: creased wool stirrup pants, oversized overcoats, a blazer with three stacked buttons and an exposed zipper. This portion of the collection felt most fall. From there, McCartney zeroed in on tie-dyed garments (a slightly random-feeling turn, though one of the most successful pieces was a knee-length patterned anorak). The finishing movement of the collection was strictly sleek, almost athletic: dresses, skirts and jumpsuits that combined black fabrics and swoopy, colored fringe to great effect. Here it was bold red, blue, green — topping black, these colors made a huge impact and will likely move when worn as well as they look.

The Accessories: Star-affixed and monk-strap (vegan!) flatforms, bags that mimic patterns seen on the clothes.

The Beauty: Loosely pulled-back hair, fresh faces.

The Takeaway: Will “Candy Ribbons by Stella McCartney” keep this designer on top? We’re betting on it.
