Franca Sozzani does not play it safe and her magazine is always well-connected with current affairs. In 2010, however, the magazine fell under scrutiny for a story inspired by the events of the Gulf oil spill. The cover featured model Kristen McMenamy photographed by Steven Meisel looking lifeless, lying on a bed of rocks and boulders with oil clearly visible on her clothes. The reference became even more apparent inside the magazine with images of the oil-drenched model choking on the chemical substance.
