One Minute with … Designer Rosie Assoulin

Rosie Assoulin took us back to school for her Spring 2015 presentation…literally. The designer showed the upcoming season’s wares in a gym at the private Catholic Notre Dame School in the West Village. It was probably the most beautiful gym we’ve ever seen at a private school, much less any school, but she added her own whimsical flair by adding a flew flourishes to make the gym look like it was (artfully!) TP’d.

Of course, the clothes had all the grace and drama for which we’ve come to love from Assoulin. Some of the pieces were even functional. The designer showed a few dresses and skirts that boasted hidden zippers, allowing the wearer to adjust the length of the frock in a snap. Genius. Also on hand was a sketch artist, armed with a paintbrush and colored pencils, whipping up beautiful renderings of each piece. All-in-all, a stunning showing from the designer.

We just had to chat with Assoulin to get a little more insight into her latest offering for Spring 2015.

theFashionSpot: So, tell us what was going through your mind when you designed this collection?

Rosie Assoulin: We all thought about summer-summer, sculptural qualities like pottery and straw.

tFS: So, that explains the bags!

RA: I hope so, yeah! At the same time, mixing evening and day in a way that feels fresh and authentic, making a situation where the clothes are working with you and not against you. I love the bags and Gianvito Rossi did the shoes for us. He’s one of the most beautiful shoemakers out there — I love everything he does. He made our flats and our heels and our pointed-toes.

tFS: So, we were so stoked to see that you dressed Michelle Dockery for the Emmys!

RA: Her stylist, Micaela Erlanger, has been a huge, wonderful support to us from the very beginning, asking for stuff. We don’t really do a lot of red carpet, and she just had that inner voice and carried us.

tFS: We mean, she killed it — she was one of our favorite looks on the red carpet.

RA: Really? Thank you so much! Joan Rivers made fun of it, and that was her last show, so it was a very big deal for us — we got a joke from Joan, it’s the best thing that happened to us! Joan’s going to be missed, but we’re glad we got to have that moment.

tFS: What’s your favorite piece in this collection?

RA: I can’t choose, are you kidding me? Um, the bags!

tFS: We noticed a couple of the girls from the school came down to see the show.

RA: They really made my day, they were so cute! A great moment from the show!

tFS: How are you winding down after Fashion Week?

RA: I’m not! We just keep our blinders on and do our own thing. The girls work really hard — we all work really hard and keep that going hopefully. Winding down is like, pizza in bed with cookies for me. Actually, my friend made me a box of cookies, and I plan on eating them in bed tonight.

tFS: YUM. What kind of cookies are they?

RA: They’re made with sugar, coconut, coconut oil, almond flour and date sugar. They are my favorite thing in the entire world. Plus, we TP’d the gym! I love that we were able to do that!
