Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared2 and Bravo’s hit reality show Launch My Line are among the designers chosen to design outfits for Canadian talent and headlining performers for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. The Opening Ceremonies will take place on February 11, 2010. Executive Director and Co-Artistic Director David Atkins states that, “this world-class team is filled with artists who know how to wow audiences at international events and are leaders in their fields, from creating magical scores to designing opulent costumes and intricate footwork.”
The Ontario natives admitted to Fashion Week Daily that they were “actually kind of freaking out about the project. There’s a lot of work to do.” Though Dean and Dan may be nervous about this ambitious undertaking, as connoisseurs of seamlessly blending music, theatre, and fashion, the Fashion Spot is confident that the twins will not disappoint.
For the past several seasons, Dean and Dan have produced runway shows during Milan Fashion Week that are the hottest in town, and yet they never stray too far from their Canadian upbringing. Maple leaf motifs pop up regularly in their designs, and their recent S/S collection was an homage to camping and the Canadian outdoors.
Vera Wang also adds her name to the list of premier designers creating garments for the Vancouver Winter Olympics. In previous Olympics, Wang has created skating outfits for medalists Michelle Kwan and Nancy Kerrigan. A former national figure skating competitor – Vera Wang competed against Olympic Gold medalist and skating icon Peggy Fleming – Wang will be designing short and long program costumes for two-time U.S. National Champion and current World Champion Evan Lysacek. Skating to Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird and Mussorgsky’s Scheherazade, Lysacek will be conjuring up images of the famed Ballets Russes, where impresario Serge Diaghilev successfully married art, music, fashion, and dance.
