It was just over two months ago that I was sent a packaging with an Alternative Apparel shirt in it. At the time I hadn’t heard of the brand, but was immediately drawn to the simple black tee. Not only was it flatteringly cut with a V-neck, but it was also soft and cozy – perfect for everything from topping a casual outfit to looking good at the gym.
Little did I know then that Alternative Apparel was fast becoming an industry-leading lifestyle apparel and accessories brand with a serious cult following (and a presence at important retailers like Bloomingdale’s). Now the brand has announced the launch date for their collaborations with Richard Chai and Jeremy Scott. The limited edition Jeremy Scott and Richard Chai lines first made their debut on the catwalk in February at New York Fashion Week (for Richard Chai, and the shirts were part of his LOVE collection shown at the tents). I’ve been anticipating them ever since.
The collection will be sold exclusively on Refinery29.com from April 20 through May 20, 2010, where prices will range from $69–$129. The collections are a nice mix of the clean, comfy, high-quality staple looks Alternative is known for, mixed with the quirky, cutting-edge styles of both designers.
All of the looks created by Chai and Scott utilize Alternative fabrics. Chai worked with Alternative’s linen jersey and modal silk fabrics to create several reworked and reinterpreted t-shirts, while Scott used Alternative’s micro-modal spandex fabric to craft three sexy "little black dresses” which take on various incarnations with raised necklines, hoods, and shoulder details (who knew that Scott would opt for black!).
These are two very exciting collaborations and a unique opportunity to get pieces from both Scott and Chai at affordable price points. Hopefully this will be the first of many such collaborations.
