It’s no secret that Vogue loves Sarah Jessica Parker. Having graced the pages of the magazine on numerous occasions (most recently as the May cover girl), the Sex and the City star will narrate the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s upcoming exhibit, American Women: Fashioning a National Identity, which will be celebrated on May 3rd at the annual Met Gala. Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton stated that because of Sex and the City, Parker is “associated with New York and with America, and with fashion as a way to shape identity,” making her a natural choice.
Personally I think the fashion credit given to Sarah Jessica Parker is a bit exaggerated. If SATC stylist Patricia Field’s voice wasn’t so harsh and raspy, she would be a much more fitting icon in terms of her influence on the way modern women dress. But alas, we all know that having the likes of SJP narrate an exhibit will bring a slew of people who may otherwise not go to the Met, so at least in that sense she is a good choice.
As for the annual Costume Institute Gala Benefit, ever since news broke that it will be hosted by Oprah Winfrey, Patrick Robinson of the Gap, and Anna Wintour, the speculation that the Gap may dress one of the attendees has been running rampant. Turns out the Gap will in fact be dressing a slew of stars. Well, sort of.
Alexander Wang, Rodarte, Sophie Theallet, and Thakoon (all of whom have worked for the Gap before), have each collaborated with the Gap’s Patrick Robinson to create gowns. M.I.A. and Zoë Kravitz will wear Alexander Wang for Gap; Kirsten Dunst and Jamie Bochert will be sporting Rodarte for Gap; Kerry Washington and Riley Keough have opted for Thakoon for Gap; and Jessica Alba and Vera Farmiga will wear Sophie Theallet. After the gala, all the Gap dresses will be up for auction to benefit the Costume Institute.
