Barbie, aka the OG Fashion Influencer, Will Be Honored at the 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards

Can you believe Barbie turned 60 this year? The Mattel doll is one of those iconic toys we all played with growing up and she’s left her mark on fashion by collaborating with over 75 designers and influencers around the world. So it makes sense that the Council of Fashion Designers of America picked Barbie to receive this year’s Board of Directors’ Tribute award at the CFDA Fashion Awards. And it’s quite an honor since past recipients include Michelle Obama, Tom Ford and Janelle Monáe.

“Barbie has had such wide influence on American fashion and culture,” said Steven Kolb, president and chief executive officer of the CFDA, in a statement. “Her story personally resonates with so many CFDA members that the board of directors decided to honor her with the special tribute.”

“It is a tremendous honor for Barbie to be recognized by the CFDA board of directors for her contributions to American fashion. For the past six decades, Barbie has inspired and been inspired by fashion and creative communities. Barbie has had the great privilege of collaborating with some of the greatest designers of our time, and this award is a moment to celebrate her lasting influence,” announced Richard Dickson, president and chief operating officer of Mattel.

And Barbie’s in good company. The awards will also honor Jennifer Lopez with the Fashion Icon Award and legendary designer (and former Barbie collaborator) Bob Mackie with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tune in on Monday June 3 for our live coverage of the 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards.
