MTV Movie Awards 2010 Fashion Recap

This year’s MTV Movie Awards was a sad night for red carpet fashion. The looks ranged from the tolerable, to the heinous, to the just plain hideous.

Jessica Biel stood-out on the red carpet with a put together and refined Fall 2010 Giambattista Valli look. There was a nice contrast between the femininity of her polka dot-accented top with its pastel-colored bow, and the flirtiness of the textured and embellished black bottom.

Sandra Bullock also made a fair choice (though it doesn’t outshine her SAG Awards Alexander McQueen stunner), with a glittering backless black mini from Oday Shakar.

Scarlett Johansson shone in a green Dolce and Gabbana look – a popular brand at the annual award ceremony. Unfortunately, Kristen Stewart and Snookie, the other celebrities who opted for designs from the Italian duo, did not fare as well.

Amanda Seyfried and Eva Mendes both went for Stella McCartney, typically one of my favorite designers. Mendes is a gorgeous woman, so she naturally always looks stunning, but the glistening one shoulder dress she opted for looked like a lesser version of a Lanvin piece. As for Seyfried, the long lace sleeves aged the actress without being the least bit flattering.

Mendes was, for better or worse, on point with one trend of the night: over-the-top embellishments. Most of the night’s major performers blinged themselves out with endless frills. Katy Perry wore looks from both Herve Leger and Zuhair Murad, each of which she paired with neon nails and make-up, and a blue wig. I’m all for red carpet statements, but Perry looked like she was about to go trick-or-treating in the suburbs in her ensembles.

The other big performer of the night, Christina Aguilera, walked the red carpet in an Atelier Versace Spring 2010 dress. This dress was beautifully crafted and I’m sure it was a vision up close – especially the intricate train – but the singer’s pin-up style hair and crimson lips were overkill against the chain straps and crossed front details of the dress.

The worst dressed of the night must go to Lindsay Lohan and her plunging, degradé Spring 2010 Pamela Roland jumper. The only positive thing to say about her look was that the wide-legged pants covered up the alcohol monitor that she was recently ordered to wear.
