PREGNANCY IS “IT”

Still pining for the latest “it” bag? That’s so last season. What has replaced the “it” bag, you wonder? Well according to the sage Czech supermodel Karolina Kurkova, pregnancy has. Defying the notion that pregnancy is as old as time, the 25 year old Kurkova remarked – “You know, it’s probably the new thing to be pregnant. It’s not to have the Chanel python bag. It’s to be pregnant.”

While we must admit that the roster of models who are with child – Adriana Lima, Gisele Bundchen, and Heidi Klum – is getting rather long, we’re not sure we’re buying Kurkova’s theory. That said, there is no shortage of options for these mothers to be when it comes to baby fashions.

Among the latest designers to join the baby fashion arena are Cynthia Rowley and Nicole Richie. Come September, Rowley will launch a full collection of baby products called Hooray by Cynthia Rowley, sold exclusively at Babies ‘R’ Us stores. Priced between $5.99 and $39.99, the line will include layette pieces like bodysuits coveralls, dresses, accessories, bibs, blankets, playwear separates, diaper bags, and playwear pieces meant to be mixed and matched in sizes newborn to 12 months (both boys and girls).

As for Nicole Richie, she is expanding beyond her House of Harlow 1960 line for a capsule maternity wear collection that she designed along with A Pea in the Pod. The collection, launching August 15th, ranges in price from $48 for tank tops to $148 for maxidresses. Richie told People Magazine that when you’re pregnant “you really feel like you have to change your whole wardrobe. And that’s the last thing a woman wants to go through,” adding “I really tried to make this line to get women excited about wearing clothes. I think the pregnant body is beautiful, and I think you should show it off.”

The ad campaign, shot by photographer James White, stars Richie, who is pregnant with her second child.
