There was a time when the Burberry trench coat pretty much cornered the upscale market as the ultimate topper for crisp — and frequently damp — fall weather. This season, the trench coat is experiencing a bit of a renaissance, even trending on the Spring 2018 runways, so you can rock your trench well into next year.
Because we like it when brands keep us on our toes, we’re not only championing the conventional cotton or nylon neutral trench, we’re also refusing to let the piece simply rest on its laurels (and plackets and buttons). At Valentino, the trench came layered and with oversized pockets. Celine got into the fold by crafting one continuous loop fashioned to look like one trench on top of another. And Loewe was business on top and a party on bottom with shredded asymmetrical fringe serving as the hem.
Maison Margiela offered up several trench incarnations, including transparent, embellished and shredded as well as layered. Alexander McQueen took a more piecemeal approach by showcasing a deconstructed coat separated (and belted) into flowing sections. Y/Project managed to marry the standard trench with an anorak silhouette that was pretty bulked up.
There are plenty of reasons to get wrapped up in a chic trench coat this fall. Scroll through the slideshow below for our best picks of the season for every budget.
