Futuristic Fashion Is Here for Fall 2018

While we’re still waiting on the flying cars, handheld sleep inducers and robot dog walkers Back to the Future Part II promised us, the future of fashion has arrived. At least according to numerous designers during the Fall 2018 season. Olivier Rousteing’s Balmain army has apparently found its uniform as the designer inundated his Fall 2018 collection with shiny suits. At Sies Marjan, the glare was restricted to one iridescent look boasting an eye-blinding trench and matching oversized bag. Maryam Nassir Zadeh offered up a crinkled, foil-like dress that fits right in with the prairie dress revolution.

In combination with hazmat gloves and balaclavas we’re anticipating becoming a thing this winter, Raf Simons provided glimpses at the future of luxury fashion in the form of Mylar blanket dresses and a shearling-lined sleeveless jacket. Wondering what to wear to work? Maison Margiela has the solution: a prismatic skirt suit you can layer over modern-day basics. Although plaid dominated Christian Dior’s fall effort, there were pops of futuristic separates, including silver outerwear and corresponding bottoms.

And you don’t have to wait to score fashion-forward looks. Retailers saw the trend coming and stocked up on shiny must-haves. Our advice? Work one futuristic piece into your outfit at a time to avoid looking like a baked potato. (That includes accessories.) Perhaps, in the future, we’ll all be able to rock silver from head to toe. Until then, check out the slideshow below to pick up a few future-focused items.
