“When I’m putting together a workout list, I look for beats per minute because when you choreograph a class or workout this helps you keep your heart rate and body movements at the proper levels. Next, for smoothness of transitioning, it is also key to have a 32-count musical phrasing for the song. A 32-count song allows for 8-count phrasing and this gives you the opportunity to change the movements every 8 counts and transition along with the groove of the song. Keeping on beat helps you and your class stay consistent and on track. Finally, I pick songs that are fun, fresh and inspiring. Updating your list regularly helps you stay motivated to work hard and enjoy the process! Music is key to setting the tone of your workout — it drives, stimulates and influences the activity and effort level in your classes. I want to pick songs that will propel me and my class to get the most out of ourselves and our time together.”
