The bob is a classic, universally recognized hairstyle; everyone knows what you mean when you reference a bob. But these celebrities are turning that notion on its head with their diverse and edgy cuts. A bob is no longer just a bob — is it a shab (shaggy bob)? A lob (long bob)? Can we coin the phrase mob for Mom bob? Whatever you want to call it, if you're considering a bob, here are some trend-forward options to show your stylist.
Jennifer Lawrence debuted her new long bob at the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. The press has been calling her long bob "the lob."
"Yesterday, Jennifer showed up an hour before call time and as she opened the door she was like ‘Mark, I want to cut it all off,’” her hairstylist Mark Townsend said to Harper’s Bazaar. “I was like, ‘What? Are we allowed to do that?’ And she said, ‘Of course, it’s my hair!’”
Dianna Agron's stylist has a name for her cut too: the shab.
"It's a cross between a bob and a shag," she told InStyle. "This is the kind of style that comes to life with the styling."
That's code for: don't try it if you like to hop out of the shower and go. Agron is seen here with the style looking very sleek at the Giffoni Film Festival in Italy.
Seen here at the MTV Movie Awards, Karlie Kloss has been wearing her traditional bob all kinds of different ways. For the event she went sleek and sort of 60s housewife, but she's known to wear it a bit more mussed up and edgy as well. She has been credited with setting off this recent craze for the cut.
Rachael Taylor shows off a modern razor cut bob at the Independent Film Project's 22nd Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards at Cipriani. Regular bang trims are a must for this look. Speaking about her role on 666 Park Avenue, she told the New York Times, "The biggest transformation required is my hair. I have a razored, chin-length bob in real life, and our hairstylist on the show takes my hair to long blond waves in about 40 minutes." Must be nice to have that option!
"Of course, everybody I know suggests a simple solution — 'Um, grow your hair out dude!' But I can’t, I feel sexiest when my hair is short."
We're going to call January Jones' shorter style the Mom Bob because the actress has definitely been going for a low-fuss style with her below-chin-length locks, as seen here at the 92nd Street Y Talks in New York. It definitely looks fresh, chic and young on the red carpet but manages to be low key and low maintenance in paparazzi shots of her out with her son.
If there's one way to separate herself from her iconic character of Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl, actress Leighton Meester chose a bold move with this blunt-cut bob. Like many of these actresses, she's keeping it low key and scraped off her face with a bit of volume at the roots. It really shows off Leighton's stunning features and gives her bold red lip over the holidays a fabulous frame.
