Watch: Should NYFW Be Centralized? [theFashionDish]

In 1993, Fern Mallis created New York Fashion Week while serving as the Executive Director of the CFDA. Then known as 7th on Sixth, Fern’s goal was to create an organized, centralized presence in New York to give American designers a platform to compete with their peers in Milan and Paris. Held at the tents in Bryant Park, the international press came in droves and the rest is history. In 2010, the shows moved to Lincoln Center, where they resided until February 2015. Beginning in September, NYFW will be setting up new digs in two separate locations: Midtown at the Skylight Moynihan Station and in SoHo at the Skylight Clarkson Sq.

Despite the “official” locations, many designers choose to show at MILK studios and independent venues throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn instead, which means a packed schedule is nearly impossible for show-goers to manage. According to DKNY’s Aliza Licht, “There is no planet where every single designer is going to show in one space.” In this episode of theFashionDish, Aliza and Fern sound off on the subject.
