Work the Trend: Palm Beach Grandma Chic

For resort and spring, designers inspired beach get-ups by turning to polka-dots, whimsical floral prints in all shapes and sizes, and a good amount of lamé. The Marc by Marc Jacobs’ Resort 2012 collection, which more than covers this fun trend, includes tropical sweaters done in metallic knits, punchy colors such as ruby red, satin short frocks, and several full looks with unbroken patterns. A favorite look from the collection, which is out in stores now, includes the Sparkly Print Floral Sweater ($228) which perfectly pairs with the Tiered Lame Skirt ($478). The full look can be seen above.

To get this look without dipping into your savings, look for colorful frocks that include playful prints like palm trees and flowers from discounted chains such as Forever 21 and H&M. Check out Forever 21’s Tropical Surplice Dress, below, which makes for the perfect vacation dress at just $22.80. And if you find yourself resistant to vacation attire this soon, start slowly by incorporating accessories like lucite bangles, skinny belts with a lame sheen, and Jackie-O frames. You can even update your current winter outfits by adding a colorful scarf, like Bindya’s Birds of Paradise Print Scarf for $150 (below). Just make sure to hold off on the layered pearl chokers and prim and proper accessories, as this look is meant to be more urban than preppy. To further avoid stepping into old-lady territory, keep your hair tousled and carefree and the rest of your makeup natural and bronzy. Now, if only this trend included 70 degree weather and a tropical cocktail, then all would be right in the world.
