Despite a Stellar Cast, Etro’s Fall 2019 Campaign Falls Short

Etro isn’t a brand our forum members covet and it’s been a while since an advertising campaign from the Italian fashion label manged to grab our attention (it was back in 2015 to be exact). Although with the unveiling of its Fall 2019 campaign, Etro’s luck may be changing as our members couldn’t stop talking about the latest images. In stark contrast from last season, Etro picked photographer Cass Bird to capture the campaign on location in New York City. The ads feature a whole host of models, including Grace Elizabeth, Andreea Diaconu, Amber Valletta, Taylor Hill, Hiandra Martinez, Marisa Berenson and a handful of male models.

Members of our forums were divided. “It’s like a collage of elements from other campaigns — Donna Karan’s city backdrop, Ralph Lauren’s face, Chloe’s wild-at-heart romanticism with the horse, and a reminder of Louis Vuitton’s luggage,” pointed out tigerrouge.

“Can someone explain to me why Cass Bird gets so much work? I cannot really see anything distinct, gorgeous, polished or creative from these pictures,” declared dontbeadrag.

“So you book a bunch of stunning superstars and end up with this? I’d require a refund,” said aracic.

Also unimpressed was GivenchyHomme: “I hate this. It looks like a seasonal advertorial for an American department store. I expect more from an Italian brand. Also, what did they do to poor Grace? That is a girl that does not need retouching!”

“Wow, it couldn’t look more Ralph Lauren if it tried! I’ve always associated Etro’s campaigns with a visual fluidity. Flowing paisley dresses layered on a paisley set, girls in motion in a street scene,” commented an underwhelmed Benn98.

“This is truly awful!” proclaimed grimm.

Although not everyone disliked the campaign. “Never been one for Etro, but I like this. Cass Bird isn’t a fave of mine, either, but she’s impressing me here, love the New York setting and the styling. And while it’s so wonderful to see Marisa Berenson, it’s Grace Elizabeth who completely steals the show for me here,” admired vogue28.

“I like it. Beautiful people, beautiful clothes, beautiful location, beautiful horse, beautiful photos. No complaints,” voiced MyNameIs.
