Adut Akech had a monumental year. We just crowned the South Sudanese-Australian beauty 2019’s top cover model (alongside Gigi Hadid), she’s starred in advertising campaigns for Chanel, Fendi, Valentino and Miu Miu and strutted the runway for several big fashion houses during fashion month. And 2020 is already looking just as bright. Vogue Australia helps Adut start off the new year with a bang by putting her on its January 2020 cover. Posing before the lens of photographer Nathaniel Goldberg on location in Paris, Adut wears an upcycled Alexander McQueen dress picked by Jillian Davison for the joyous cover shot.
According to the majority of our forum members, Adut’s latest missed the mark. “It doesn’t look like Adut and there’s something very pedestrian about the overall cover. Maybe it’s the redesign, the garish yellow masthead or the dress, which looks secondhand. Maybe if she made direct eye contact it may have saved this,” critiqued Benn98.
“Hideous,” aracic chimed in.
“Awful, what a mess,” declared an underwhelmed jal718.

“I’m missing the strong eye contact, her hands and a cooler layout. It looks very pedestrian, but I love her face, smile, dress and the yellow for me kinda works, too,” said Bertrando3.
But the cover found a few fans. “I actually…love this? Her smile and that McQueen dress stand out in the greenery and I don’t mind the yellow masthead one bit,” commented dodencebt.
“What a gorgeous cover, wow. Love everything about it, it will stand out on the newsstands,” praised Miss Dalloway.
“Love it…it’s a great take on an Australian summer cover without the standard beachy hair bohemian girl,” noted samoanceleb.
“Warm, innocent, gorgeous,” Srdjan simply stated.
