NYC’s First Neiman Marcus Is Opening at Hudson Yards

It’s kind of surprising to think that of all the thousands of stores New York City dwellers have to choose from, Neiman Marcus is not one of the options — at least not for long. Manhattan, home to upscale luxury destinations like Bloomingdale’s, Barneys, Henri Bendel and Bergdorf Goodman, is now adding to that selection with the announcement that Neiman Marcus will be opening up a location at Hudson Yards.

The new store will be three levels at the Shops at Hudson Yards, taking up the 5th, 6th and 7th floors of the complex. The move certainly seems smart — Hudson Yards is expected to be the future home of New York Fashion Week, so having a high-end department store in the same location seems to make sense. But for a lot of insiders, it seems like luxury overload. Many of the designers Neiman Marcus would have in its doors already have several locations in NYC. So the question is: Do they need another?

And it’s not just Neiman Marcus. According to WWD, Saks Fifth Avenue is planning on opening another location at Brookfield Place, a new shopping center close to the World Trade Center. The actual World Trade Center will be outfitted with a shopping center and it looks like Tiffany & Co., Tom Ford and Giorgio Armani are lining up to snap up space in the new spot. South Street Seaport is also getting a revamped shopping center. Nordstrom is even opening a store in Manhattan. There’s definitely a lot going on on the retail front in the city, and these are just a few of the many retail projects in development. But Neiman Marcus’ people are hoping that the location — far away from many of New York’s other luxury destinations like 5th Avenue — will help the cause.

The store won’t open until 2018, so NYC residents don’t get too excited yet. But do brace yourself for an oversaturation of shopping on the island over the next few years.
