Fashion editors could be in for a busier than usual July. The CFDA has been shopping around the idea of holding a Men’s Fashion Week in New York City and it seems people are really getting behind the idea. As CFDA CEO Steven Kolb tells The New York Times, the idea has been getting support from designers and sponsors alike “because of the patriotism of it all, as American designers.”
America is chock-full of exceptional menswear designers, many of whom are gaining traction even in the womenswear market. Billy Reid, Public School and Thom Browne are just a few of the talents America harbors, all of which became popular thanks to innovative menswear designs.
Also, because New York City doesn’t have a Men’s Fashion Week, many American designers have felt forced to show in other countries. Buying season for menswear occurs over the summer, and those who can’t make the trip across the pond have to settle for showing collections in September, after buyers have made purchases. It simply doesn’t make any sense. It is also difficult for designers with smaller budgets to stage shows abroad. Plus, why should they have to?
The CFDA needs to raise $2 million in order to put the plan in motion and has until the start of 2015 to do so. Let’s hope the organization can get it together!
