Urban Outfitters Ups the Ante

Last time we checked in with Urban Outfitters, they were beginning to stock items by the newly beloved Pendleton brand – perfectly patterned wallets, bath towels, and bedspread-worthy blankets rounded out the stock.

While they’ve recently included bags in their Pendleton inventory – a leather-trimmed overnight bag clocks in at just under $200, a neat cross-body number is $48 – Urban Outfitters has just significantly upped their retailing ante.

The lifestyle retail giant has sharpened their focus on both beauty and baubles, opening two new sub-e-boutiques on their website, hawking jewelry and make-up.
Of course, the store had been stocking both jewelry and make-up for some time, but the launch of the new, dedicated “shops” results in an extreme – and welcome – expansion of product in both categories.
By regularly stocking trendy and affordable jewelry, Urban has long been a go-to for mid-priced accessories.
The launch of their Jewelry Studio is something else entirely: think gobs of luxe necklaces, bracelets, and rings from names you hopefully already know.

Jewelry Studio stocks 10 designers with decidedly higher-end pieces – Lizzie Fortunato Jewels, Species By The Thousands, Dara Ettinger, and Archive Jewelry, among others. 

There’s a huge focus on necklaces and rings with this collection – neckpieces are comprised of chains, cord, and jewels, the rings tend to resemble animals and cover the knuckle, or are designed to fit two fingers. 
Quirky and statement-making pieces abound – Calourette’s “Finger Ring” is a silver-and-enamel double finger with fingernails painted red, Lizzie Fortunato Jewels’ “Do Right Woman” necklace is a multi-material, bejeweled choker.
Though the price point is a bit higher – pieces range from $60 up to $483 – the stock is certainly a step up from before. Be sure to peep Urban’s blog for cool Q&A’s with each of the designers involved in the Jewelry Studio.

The beauty shop appears to have all your bases covered (make-up, nails, hair and skin care, scent, accessories, and tools) and includes pretty much everything under the sun – eyelash curlers, glittered “chrome pigment” eye shadow, hair oil, and more nail polish and nail art products than seem possible.
Popular brands being stocked include Anna Sui (an Anna Sui hairbrush, anyone?), Manic Panic, Demeter, Stila, and Too Faced. A substantial “natural and organic” section is a nice addtion and includes both the expected – skin care, lip balm – and the unexpected – Egyptian Magic Cream, natural nail lacquer, deep red lipstick.

As with anything, Urban Outfitters refuses to take itself too seriously: keep your eyes peeled for making-up curiosities, like the creepily realistic “rock soap” and the nail brush shaped like a hedgehog.
