Since taking on the double duty role of helming his own namesake brand and co-designing for Versace’s diffusion brand, Versus, with Donatella Versace, Christopher Kane hasn’t ceased to impress. Unlike his past collections for Versus, however, the designer’s Fall 2011 collection did not have an immediately palpable Versus feel to it. It was dark and moody, but not in a particularly sexy way. In fact, there was harshness to the nearly all black collection that at times almost had a gothic, Rick Owens-like feel. That said, Kane does have an understanding for the Versus customer and she will take most things glittery over anything subversive almost any day. To that end, Kane accented a slew of his looks with patterned glitter (in fittingly Versace-style geometric iterations). The beauty, however, was that because of the controlled color palette the tacky factor that glitter can easily take on was avoided.
The stand-outs were the cocktail looks that incorporated contrasting midriff and rib cage-area paneling with leather, particularly worth singling out was a strapless bone corset dress that will give the Versus girl a welcome tough-luxe update to her typical lineup of sexy body-conscious dresses.
