Prabal Gurung Spring 2012 Runway Review

This season Parabal Gurung, coming off a few great weeks in which Sarah Jessica Parker wore a number of his designs to high-profile events, found himself inspired by Nobuyoshi Araki’s Sensual Flowers series and as such his collection featured a recurring floral motif that varied in its degree of success.

The more daring looks – made with sheer panels, harnesses, piping, latex, laser cut leather – especially when done in bright colors, often fell flat. It didn't help matters that the makeup look, with lips ranging from crimson to deep purple to fuchsia, was bold in nature and that the accessories included colorful, retro sunglasses – there was a lot to take in at once.

When the designer stuck with a monochrome palette, whether it be for a sheer accented black dress or black separates, and to looks that didn’t embellish the engineered floral prints, he was exceedingly more successful.
