Lover AW2012 ‘Lydia’

Absolutely devastated that Lover won’t be presenting a runway of exquisite lace and whimsical Peter Pan collars at Australia Fashion Week next month? We know, we know, but if you’re living in the Sydney region, at least you can drown your sorrows in their beautiful Lydia collection at the brand’s new flagship store in Strand Arcade.

We’re talking in figurative terms though, obviously, because the clothes are way too nice to risk staining with saccharine tears. Inspired by Winona Ryder’s character Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice, this collection shows Nic Briand and Susien Chong experimenting with a darker side of the Lover label.

Alluringly rich ruby and teal shades are mixed with crisp whites and pale lilac, and the cuts are quintessentially Lover. Heavy on Peter Pan collars (literally, since this time they’re made of leather) and featuring more lace than Lydia’s frothy 1980s wedding dress, none of the pieces would look out of place in the wardrobes of loyal Lover disciples Rumi Neely and Alexa Chung. More Beetlejuice inspiration can be seen in sheer black shirts laced with Victorian ruffles and tailored tweed suiting, and is perhaps to answer for a decidedly un-Lover like high-necked plastic cape.

Obviously, clothes like this are too good to compete for hanger space with other brands, so Lydia is now available in Lover’s shiny new flagship. The gallery-like space showcases against dark wooden floors and walls that are clean and white but for a giant, changeable wall art display. As if all that isn’t enough to make you forgive the brand’s fashion week absence, this should do it — the store is only two doors down from where Nic first asked Susien out on a date. Can we get a collective high-pitched squeal?
