Haute couture season opens in Paris today, June 30th, and the season’s most highly anticipated couture shows include Giorgio Armani’s 35th-anniversary show, John Galliano ‘s show for Christian Dior, Karl Lagerfeld’s show for Chanel, young Italian designer Alessandra Facchinetti’s couture debut for Valentino (replacing the recently retired Valentino Garavani), Gaspard Yukievich for Maison Rodier, Yohji Yamamoto, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and the 37 year-old Ma Ka, who will be the first Chinese designer to unveil a couture collection.


Twenty-three couturiers are set to show this year along with dozens of other designers not on the official calendar (regulated by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture), who will nonetheless be showing around Paris in the coming days.


Armani will show his Privé collection at the Palais de Chaillot by the Eiffel Tower and the famed couturier’s contribution to fashion will also be recognized this Thursday, July 3rd, when he is set to receive the Légion d’Honneur from the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, in a ceremony at the Elysée Palace. Paris couture showings will run through July 3rd.
