WALTER F/W 2009

With only two rows of seats on either side of the runway and minimal room for standing, Walter Baker’s show, which took place at his studio, was packed to the brim.

The designer, who got his start in finance, has developed a loyal following since founding his label back in 1991. Baker continually delivers flirty feminine tops and dresses that are heavy on the romantic details – his clientele is often described as “uptown with a downtown sensibility.”

Most of the looks Baker showed could be worn from day-to-night which fits the label’s contemporary-shopping clientele.

The designer showed a number of plaids further pointing to the fact that plaids, at least for now, are here to stay (they were also heavily featured in Charlotte Ronson and Nicolas K’s shows).

Shirt dresses, Missoni-esque pullover sweaters, boyfriend jackets, tuxedo jackets with exposed metallic lining on the sleeves, and flirty skirts and dresses with painterly prints were a welcome counterbalance to looks with a harder edge – black liquid zipper pants, waxed smocking leather jacket and shorts, a short modal tunic, and a black liquid high waist skirt.

To go with a number of the more fitted, darker pieces, jewelry from Marie Lise Lachapelle’s line were chosen – of note multi-link silver chain necklaces which brought a lighter feel to the more edgy looks.
