PARIS: JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC F/W 09

BY Sharon Feiereisen

If there’s one person that can consistently be counted on to put on an entertaining show, it’s Jean-Charles de Castelbajac.

His designs are consistently clever, whimsical, but also about making a statement – last season he showed a pro-Obama yellow sequin dress with “I dream of change today” emblazoned on the back.

JC/DC was one of the 30 designers picked to design a dress inspired by Rykiel to be shown in her honor during her 40th anniversary celebration last season and he ended up showing two satin screen-printed hair dresses that looked nearly identical to the one he showed at Rykiel’s homage in his own collection that season.

For Fall/Winter 2009 he once again showed another such dress, but with the image of Andy Warhol – fitting because JC/DC’s work certainly has a Warhol quality to it.

The designer showed some delightful Kermit the Frog-inspired hats, sweaters, dresses and a coat made of Kermit stuffed animals (that kind of reminded me of Fernando and Humberto Campana iconic stuffed animal chairs), Michael Jackson and Clint Eastwood dresses, leopard meets Lego-colors two-piece looks (the designer has been inspired by Lego in the past), and wholly wearable plaid blanket coats.

This was another flawlessly executed JC/DC collection that one can not help but smile over.
