PARIS: ELIE SAAB S/S 2010

The Balmain effect has conquered another collection. This sudden surge of tight, bedazzled and structured dresses and jackets has to be credited to Christophe Decarnin, and the proof is in Elie Saab.

While some other designers have taken the past two season’s Balmainia as a reference or point of inspiration, the influence is undisputed in the Spring 2010 collection from Elie Saab. Known for his grand, sweeping red carpet gowns favored by celebrities, the designer made a drastic change with this darker, sexier collection.

The only quintessential Saab reference is the rhinestones and beading, which unfortunately only add to the problem here. As for the actual collection, it was a watered down re-interpretation of the major trends from the last few seasons.

Fall’s all-white collection (following in the footsteps of Karl Lagerfeld’s for Chanel) and this season’s blunder are sure to add to the speculation that the label is going through a rough time.

Nary an original idea in sight, the company had better hope that it’s die hard fans continue to support or there could be more dark times in the near future.
