PARIS: JOHN GALLIANO S/S 2010

Never one to shy away from a spectacle, John Galliano always presents a show just as, if not more, entertaining as the collection.

This season was no departure, but a laser-lit runway flowing and bubbles in the air were not the only fanciful elements of the presentation. A whimsical look at the way old Hollywood women lived and dressed, this season’s collection for the designer’s eponymous label was a story of layering and accessorizing playful 1950’s fashion.

Unfortunately, the spectacle was lost on those who saw the collection in person, as a downpour in Paris, coupled with a late start and a leaky roof, made it very unpleasant.

The collection itself was a wonderful story of dramatic dresses with playful separates and incredible hats by Milliner Stephen Jones. Romance and bohemia, common themes for the designer, were also woven throughout the collection – but it could be argued that this is Galliano’s only show best seen on a computer screen rather than from the runway room in Paris.
