DIY: MIU MIU THIGH HIGHS

If Prada is Barbie, then Miu Miu is Skipper – a cheaper, younger, and (let’s face it) more fun little sister to the original fashion icon.

So when the line that’s used Zooey Deschanel, Kirsten Dunst, and The Fiery Furnace’s Eleanor Friedberger as models sent a pair of encrusted, embroidered thigh-highs down their Fall runway, we did more than swoon – we schemed.

After all, Miu Miu clothes fly off the racks at record speeds, and even girls who can afford the $425 price tag of Miu Miu’s cool legwear still have to track them down before they sell out.

Our alternative?  Make them ourselves.

Here’s what we did:

1.  Take a pair of heavy wool or cotton socks (ours were from Falke, but it doesn’t matter – yours can be from the back of your closet).

2.  Buy packs of sequins and beads from your local craft store,  Keep the color palette tight – silvers, rose-golds, very light pinks, black, and clear baubles only.  We actually took a confetti pack and sorted the colors we needed from the rest of the sparkle pack, which took about an hour.

3.  Break out a needle and thread, and gently sew the sequins in clusters. Make sure you don’t sew anything on the sock’s foot, or you won’t be able to walk!

4.  Wear them around.  Make people jealous.  You know the drill.

Total cost:  $20-$30, depending on how fancy you want to get with the socks!
