Christian Siriano Flashes Back to the 50s with a Contemporary Twist for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

The Inspiration: Uptown girls who are, like, really into the 50s.

The Look: A jaw-droppingly gorgeous collection full of prim party dresses and gowns — all with just the right mix of sexy and elegance. Think mid-century modern, but filtered through 2014’s idea of powerful female sexuality, where full skirts and sheer paneling are not incongruent. Patterns range from a neat tinted marble to a trippy take on the classic checkerboard. Fuzzy emerald green and royal purple outerwear nicely rounded out the collection. Overall, it’s the kind of minimal we might need right now since there are accents and adornments, but it’s not overkill. Interesting without ever being too much, “class act” will be an appropriate descriptor for anyone wearing these garments.

The Accessories: Gorgeous boxy handbags in white and emerald along with jaunty wide-brimmed hats (both wool and lace) worn slightly cocked to the side. Lace-effect heels, too. Oh, and a handful of look-finishing sunglasses.

The Beauty: Thick cat eyes paired with frosty pink, nude-effect lips.

The Takeaway: Vintage-inspired — especially pre-60s — is anything but stuffy when done right.
