Dries Van Noten Goes with Bold Florals and Graphic Patterns (Runway Review)

The Inspiration: Tropical.

The Look: It’s a particularly exciting time for Dries Van Noten whose first major exhibition, Dries Van Noten–Inspirations, will open on March 1 and will occupy two floors at Les Arts Décoratifs, which is located next to the Louvre in Paris. The designer has said that Les Arts Décoratifs has been an inspiration, especially its rich textiles, which may explain the designer’s vibrant and colorful Fall 2014 outing. Oversized florals reoccurred throughout whether via prints or oversized pins and necklaces. Often the florals took on a tropical feel and were mixed in with graphic geometric prints. Silhouettes were slightly slouchy, which worked well to give a more fall-appropriate feel to the brighter looks.

The Accessories: Retro sunglasses, T-strap heels, leather gloves, booties and graphic fold-over envelope clutches.

The Beauty: Side-parted hair tucked behind one ear, pale lips and thick black line was created over the models’ eyes for a graphic effect (MAC’s Chromocake was used).

The Takeaway: Classic silhouettes gave a wearable bend to the collection’s array of electric patterns.
