The Inspiration: “The Thirties, especially women like Hannah Höch and Lee Miller, who were pivotal figures in the Dada and surrealist art worlds,” according to style.com.
The Look: The designer’s Thirties inspiration came through from the start with a series of black calf-length double-breasted coats with white buttons and a slight flare at the bottom – their only flaw, a shoulder height flower, a trend which should have died with Sex and the City. The coats then morphed into a series of similarly white button-accented tops before Phoebe Philo showed the collection’s strongest outerwear pieces, a series of cocoon coats. Long ribbed knits, straight leg slouchy pants with a slight flare at the bottom, flared skirts, gingham separates and a slew of other coat styles including ones with fringed hem collars and belted styles were also in the mix.
The Accessories: High-shine platform sandales, flatforms with ribbed soles, Dr Martens-like boots, Lucite bangles and new hexagonal shaped handbags.
The Beauty: Hair was pulled back into a knotted ponytail and models had a reddish smoky eye.
The Takeaway: While this season’s shoes held questionable appeal, there’s no doubt that Philo has retail winners on her hand with this season’s outerwear lineup.
