Summer Shopping: Shorts for Every Occasion

As the weather gets better, the tights come off and we enter the season of bare legs. Shorts have long been a summer favorite as they are both comfortable and practical, but all shorts are not made the same. When styled properly you can wear shorts for any occasion. Here are a few options for every situation.

Daytime Shorts

For daytime, the most common time to see shorts out and about, the options are endless. The denim variety, either cut-off or rolled, is the easiest to style but is very casual. Opt for lighter colors for a more classic and dressed up daytime look.

  1. Sandro $220
  2. James Perse $58
  3. Elizabeth and James $165
  4. Tibi $200

Work-Appropriate Shorts

The hardest place to wear shorts is definitely at work. Providing that your workplace allows them, tailored or draped shorts work best. Choose fabrics and colors that will blend in easily with your professional wardrobe. This is also an excellent occasion to wear wider cut shorts or even a skort (which I think is long overdue for a revival). Be careful of short lengths when wearing them at work and take into account the type of work you do; if you are bending over often or moving around, they may end up being more revealing than if you are seated most of the day.

  1. Theory $160
  2. Carven $325
  3. Elizabeth and James $295
  4. Carven $600

Shorts After Dark

Care must also be taken when wearing shorts at night because they can easily be seen as too casual. Fabric and cut come into play when dressing for evening as well as styling. Leather shorts can work great with a silky blouse and high wedges or, if you’re daring enough, sequined shorts paired with an understated shirt and very few accessories could make a gorgeous evening look.

  1. Kelly Bergin $430
  2. Phillip Lim $295
  3. Maggie Ward $265
  4. J.Crew $150
