Joan Smalls Makes a Tired Concept Look Fresh in Michael Kors’ Spring 2017 Campaign

Though Michael Kors has been recycling his car + clothing campaign concept for the past few seasons, he sure knows how to cast a model. For Fall 2016, he gave us Freja Beha Erichsen, for Resort 2017, he served up Anja Rubik, and now we’re treated to Joan Smalls for Spring 2017. Since she opened the show during New York Fashion Week, it was a given that Joan would star in the campaign, based on Kors’ past record. Joan has never looked better as she plays the role of the Michael Kors woman with ease, photographed by Mario Testino.

Our forum members loved the campaign — eventually. “The car again, seriously?” questioned a disgruntled thatsfierce the moment the campaign dropped.

“Why can’t they just move out of the car for their campaign?” ranted ChicSaks.

Anlabe32 wasn’t too impressed with the outcome either, writing, “This is getting painful to watch, especially combined with the wrong model. Spice it up MK and get rid of Testino.”

The mood of the thread soon changed, however. “I think it’s quite glamorous. Hopefully it’s an only-girl campaign for Joan, and no matter how commercial this looks, she looks powerful and sophisticated. With MK being a mass market luxury brand, I quite like the idea of a black Latina model being plastered all over MK stores especially with the current state of US politics,” admired ash92.

“THIS! Joan looks incredible, selling the typical MK lifestyle, making it feel fresh for the first time in ages,” replied zoom in agreement.

“I like how the white car complements the styling and Joan looks lovely,” raved kokobombon.

Also a fan of the casting was Zposen: “She looks so strong and gorgeous!”

“I love this. Beautiful, commercial, simple, yet dynamic and strong. It’s very Michael Kors and Joan looks amazing,” guimon declared.
