Backstage at NYFW: Porcelain Skin and Veiled Ponytails at Katie Gallagher

Nick Irwin has got to be one of the most down-to-earth, cool and talented hair stylists out there. He is the global creative director for Catwalk by TIGI and is the type of dude you want to just grab a beer with and call your friend. We were so stoked when we got the chance to check out the hair he created backstage at Katie Gallagher for the Spring 2015 collection. “Last season we went very graphic, and it was a really strong aesthetic,” explained Irwin. “We’ve done the opposite this time. Hair and makeup has taken a bit of a backseat since the color palette is going to be a lot of nude and white.” He went for a beachy, undone, low ponytail using TIGI Catwalk Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo ($16) for texture and managed to turn up the drama by using a veil to cover the models’ faces and ponytails. This was anything but subtle and we loved everything about it.

Regan Rabanal, senior artist for MAC Cosmetics, walked us through the makeup backstage. “Katie was inspired by a lot of organic shapes, pastels and natural tones,” Rabanal pointed out. “So Romero Jennings, director of makeup artistry at MAC Cosmetics, created beautiful porcelain skin to bring the idea of phantasm to life.” There was a ton of highlighting around the cheekbones and brow bones, a pearly mauve eye gloss went over the lids for a “glassy” polished finish and the eyes were lined with a red lip pencil to give models “a tired, but beautifully broken effect.”
