The Dos and Don’ts of Botox

We admit that we’re curious about Botox. In fact, some of us (cough, cough) have our first consultation for it later this week. But what do we need to know before going under the needle? Plenty, as it turns out. We met with Lynn Wojton, Next Artists RN specialist in anti-aging skin treatments, at the Next Artists Beauty Lounge during NYFW. Wojton has a background in injectables and patiently answered our questions. Have to admit, we’re a little less nervous about our appointment now.

theFashionSpot: You’re a registered nurse with Next?

Lynn Wojton: Yes, they pair me with featured skincare brands to represent them and be their medical expert.

tFS: And you have a background in Botox and injections from your work. What are the dos and don’ts of injectables?

LW: The don’ts are: More is not always better.

tFS: Less is good.

LW: Less is good. More is evil. Just being conservative, working with your natural bone structure and keeping everything looking refreshed as opposed to overdone.

tFS: There are so many different kinds of injectables. Do you have one you prefer over the others?

LW: They’re different tools for different reasons.

tFS: If you’re in your 20s, what should you use as a preventative?

LW: Preventative is Botox or a neurotoxin. Botox is like Kleenex, it’s a household name everyone asks for.

tFS: And if you’re in your 30s and you’re starting to get finer lines, what’s your option?

LW: Finer lines, you still fall in the category of using a neurotoxin like Botox. Because you can smooth out fine lines. There’s still hope. You can smooth out fine lines by having the injection and being consistent with it. It relaxes the muscles that create the lines. And if they’re consistently relaxed, it creates a smoother appearance.

tFS: So once you have a furrow, then you have to go into fillers?

LW: Once you have a crease that’s there without any expression, called static line, then that’s when you want to consider something like filler. And for that kind of wrinkle you would use hyaluronic acid like Juvéderm, Restylane or Belotero. Belotero is great for fine lines like crow’s feet, the fine lines around the mouth. Juvéderm and Restylane are great for deeper folds.

tFS: Your skin looks great. Have you had any? Because you can’t tell.

LW: I do my own. And that’s my aesthetic. Everyone should look that way. Society believes that you should be frozen, you should be expressionless, you shouldn’t have any lines, you shouldn’t have any wrinkles or hollowing. You want expression!
