6 Runway Trends That Will Be Everywhere This Summer

This summer, it’s all about the sleeve. Generally not your typical focal point, the sleeve has received a major revamp and is more dramatic, romantic, sexy and creative than ever before. Jacquemus sent modern-day Shakespearean sleeves down the runway this season and Preen updated the polo with some flamenco-inspired ruffled sleeves. At the other end of the sleeve spectrum, juxtaposing all these billowy, large proportioned sleeves were long, slender sleeves slit up past the elbow for a sleeker, more suggestive look. David Koma gave us some extra fabric hanging a few inches past the fingertips for a more exaggerated look, while Lacoste and Preen gave us the option of reinserting our wrists after giving us the right to bare arms.

Another key trend this summer is the ongoing movement to blur the distinction of underwear from outerwear. On the one hand, designers are putting bralettes, creative corsetry and various lingerie-inspired garments on display; on the other, they continue to give longevity to the transparent trend that has us looking past the surface and once again honing in on our undies. Christian Dior, Lanvin and Balmain all showed sheer looks that brazenly freed the nipple, while Prada and Kenzo showed us how much fun a bra can be when worn over your favorite blouse.

For a night on the town, we have all been given permission to bust out our favorite New Year’s Eve frocks as slinky, sparkly sequins have made a return from the 90s. Alexander Wang sent an iridescent glittery sheath down the runway and Jeremy Scott channeled Judy Jetson with his hot pink number that bore a satellite around the thighs. For those looking for more shimmery inspiration, sequins were, in fact, a way of life for Ms. Paris Hilton in the 90s.

Last, but not least, no more matching your shoes to your belt, or your top to your bottoms for that matter! Mix and match until you clash is the name of the game this season. You’re going to want to bust out your favorite multipatterned looks to create a mesmerizing and hypnotic outfit combo a la Prada. And if you can’t fathom combining multiple printed garments, you can try something a bit more subtle, like House of Holland’s necktie with a checkered blouse.
