Keep the Spirit of Summer Going in Citrusy Chartreuse

If the days that follow the first Monday in September fill you with sadness and longing for lazy, hazy beach days, trust us, you’re not alone. In schoolrooms and offices everywhere, homework resumes, summer Fridays halt and we all know things are only going to get crazier. How to beat these back-to-the-grind blues? Silly as it sounds, we’d say the solution is to keep your outfits happy and bright. (As outside, so within.)

Luckily, these days, that’s a task that’s as easily said as done. Notice-me neon has been a huge trend both on and off the runways for quite a few seasons (dating as far back as Spring 2018). It’s even begun to birth subtrends, most notably Fall 2019’s chartreuse wave.

Electrifying greenish-yellows jolted through the Fall 2019 collections, particularly those shown in Paris. Cameras rarely do the brilliant color justice, but above you can see it light up the runway at Balenciaga, Nina Ricci and Marine Serre. The former paired an outsize, top-pleated chartreuse coat with straight-leg cobalt denim. Nina Ricci sent out a glowing, high-leg bodysuit framed by low-rise black trousers, topping things off with an equally bright and angular hat. Marine Serre, meanwhile, showed zero restraint, complementing a beautifully blinding, fur-lined jacket with glowing 3M tights.

Models (like Dilone, above center) and showgoers (like Susie Bubble, pictured below) were likewise keen on the color. While chartreuse plays especially well with blues and purples (its opposites on the color wheel), those just dipping their toes into the trend may prefer to offset the bright AF color with relatively submissive neutrals (blacks, browns, tans, whites). Your call.
